CAPTAIN CARRADEAN (DEAN) L. BROWN, USN (Ret)
Captain Carradean (Dean) L. Brown, USN is the Senior Naval Science Instructor at Georgetown High School NJROTC Unit, Georgetown, South Carolina. A native of Buffalo, New York, he received his commission via the NROTC program at the University of South Carolina in December 1972 along with his undergraduate degree, a B.A. in History. Captain Brown was first assigned aboard USS BELKNAP (CG-26) where he held several Operations and Weapons Department billets until BELKNAP’s decommissioning after her tragic collision wit the USS JOHN F. KENNEDY (CV-67) in the Mediterranean Sea in November 1975. Captain Brown was next assigned to USS ASSURANCE (AG-521), a submarine-tracking vessel home ported in Charleston, South Carolina, as Operations Officer and ultimately as Executive Officer. In his first shore tour, Captain Brown taught Naval Engineering and Combat Systems at the NROTC Unit, Rice University, Houston, Texas for two years. Captain Brown reported in June 1980 as Weapons Department Head aboard USS PAUL (FF-1080) home ported in Mayport, Florida. After that tour he served as Operations Department Head aboard USS KING (DDG-41) out of Norfolk, VA until the fall of 1983 when he returned ashore to the staff of Commander, U.S. Naval Surface Forces, Atlantic. During this two-year assignment, Captain Brown was the Scheduling Officer for all Atlantic Fleet combatants surface ships. In late 1985 Captain Brown began duties as commissioning Executive Officer for the new Aegis cruiser, USS THOMAS S. GATES (CG-51), then under construction in Bath, Maine. After the ship’s July 1987 commissioning, Captain Brown continued as XO thru December 1988. He departed T.S. GATES for service on the staff of Commander, U.S. SEVENTH FLEET embarked on USS BLUE RIDGE (LCC-20), home ported in Yokosuka, Japan. Captain Brown’s tour ran through the staff/ship’s deployment to the Persian Gulf during OPERATION DESERT SHIELD/STORM. In the summer of 1991, Captain Brown returned to Charleston, South Carolina and assumed command of USS CARR (FFG-52), a guided missile frigate. During his tour as Commanding Officer, CARR deployed to the Mediterranean Sea and participated in over four months of Red Sea Maritime Interdiction Operations in support of UN sanctions against Saddam Hussein’s Iraq. Next, Captain Brown attended the Naval War College in Newport, Rhode Island earning his M.A. degree in National Security and Strategic Affairs before being assigned from 1994-1997 to Headquarters, U.S. European Command in Stuttgart, Germany where he served as the Chief, Current Operations Division. In August 1997 he reported to the Armed Forces Staff College, Norfolk, Virginia where he was a faculty member and later Deputy Commandant/ Dean of the Joint and Combined Warfighting School (JCSS), the senior course at the institution. From there, Captain Brown reported to the faculty of the Naval War College in the summer of 2000 where he served as a faculty member and Executive Assistant in the Strategy and Policy Department until his 30 June 2003 retirement from active service Captain Brown’s awards include the Defense Superior Service Medal, the Legion of Merit, the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, the Navy Meritorious Service Medal (3 citations), the Navy Commendation Medal (4 citations) as well as various service, unit and campaign awards. Captain Brown resides in Georgetown with his wife, the former Robin Elizabeth Perrin of Union, South Carolina. They have two grown sons; David a Lieutenant in the U.S. Navy submarine service and Robert, a sound tech engineer living in the Washington, DC area.
